2022/ 23 NEWS

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE CLUB AND RESULTS OF THE GAMES PLAYED DURING THE SEASON.

Como March 28

Well we have finally come to the last game of our season, it seems August 22 was ages ago.  During this year we have lost some dear friends but as in the world we have gained new friends into the police bowls family.

On a night that was slightly humid to start with it finished in near perfect conditions.  The two greens ran beautifully if not a little slow, but again for night bowls and the humidity what can one expect, also the greenkeeper had to rush one green into play as he was told one green needed. Again great hospitality by Como as a sausage sizzle was put by the club prior to the game.

It turned out a tremendous night for the police and quite a number of teams where either their carnival teams or very close.  We ended up winning on all 7 rinks and the wine giverawayerers with smallest winning margin was Darren Rowlinson, Paul Walker, Marg Booth and Harvey Larson.

Our biggest winners were the quartet of Tony Kay, Bob Bandy, John Hodges and Derry Barber.

Look forward to seeing everyone at our Presentation night next week.

Bassendean March 21

Another close game for me...only 4 minutes away.  We took on another cat this week the mighty Basso Lions.  Club member Scotty Bermingham and his crew put on a sausage sizzle at the start for all to enjoy.  Again 7 rinks were in battle and we only needed one player to assist and fortunately for one of our teams it was Dave Sneglar who is one of the best leads in One White.  The Feasey's were there for both sides with Helen in basso green and Barry in police colours.

Our teams currently are as close to our carnival sides as we can get them for practice.

A tough night for all with high humidity early, the speed was slow for a Bassendean green, but an early ascendency was able to be taken by the home team.  In the end the win for the Basso team was comfortable by almost 30 shots, our strongest rink was Darren Rowlinson, Paul Walker.  Johnny 'Sweetheart' Hodges and ring-in Dave Sneglar.  Darren was heard to comment to Paul its amazing how easy this game is if you can see the jack and bring the right glasses.

Our associate away team had its first hit out as a group and were defeated by the Basso team with Scott Bermingham.  Team was Jenni and Peter Rogalski, Helen Miskell and good to see Leslie York having her first hit out since her crash.

Lina Evans left her bowls at North Beach and had to use some spares but her reason was only just plausible as Trevor had done his back in bowling and was in hospital.  We hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Can you spot the similarities ?

Kalamunda March 14

Well a home game for us Midlandites.  The home of Corny and Wayne we took on the Cougars on another lovely night.  We have been blessed by the weather gods for most of this year.

We had 7 rinks each with one cougar assisting us to make up the numbers.  In what was a rather tight game in the end with the police ending up on the right side of the ledger.

Our biggest winners for the police team was no other than Joe Rollnik ( he must have a huge selection of wine by now) and ably assisted by his dynamic trio of Rick Scupham, Jeff Humpleby and Garry Rowlinson.

Our losing rink was the other Rowlinson (Darren) with Paul (Ray Charles) Walker, Egon Miko and Derry Barber.  Paul affectionately appeared as a Ray Charles lookalike as he had to wear his thick dark sunglasses whilst playing night bowls.

After the game we saw the largest ever servings of party pies and sausage rolls.

Sorrento March 7

For most of us the travel to Sorrento is a fair hike, the smile was beaming on Leon and Dave's face as this is the closest game for them.  Sorrento again was a very busy night with 96 social bowlers on the other two greens and the police contingent on the other.  The grass was absolutely perfect as it ran beautifully and was a great credit to the club.

6 rinks took to the green after eating a sausage and looking at the darts honour board with our Tony Kay's name all over it.  As he said talent always shows through.

The game was rather close across 5 of the rinks but one blow out rink for the police was an almost flawless performance by Darren Rowlinson, Paul Walker, Rick Scupham and Shaun Peters and they won the wine quite convincingly.  Our wine giverawayers was 50%of the wine winners the previous week of Joe Rollnik, Garry Rowlinson, Egon Miko and Kiera Redden.

And on another note a few of the travelling team to Swan Hill became Collingwood members officially yesterday

Scarborough Feb 28

It appears we were blessed by the weather gods again and another lovely Perth night was witnessed.

We took on Kiera's home club and were able to field 7 rinks with only one ring in from Scarborough.  It was good to see a mixture of uniforms on the green with a few Doubleview and Warwick players mixed in with the Scarborough crew.  The evening started off with a sausage or two.

It was a rather rough night for a couple of rinks and we had two teams lose by 17 shots.  The most relieved skipper was Robbie Bellis whose grin was the biggest we had seen in long time when his crew won the countback and the wine was given away by Tony Kay, Leon Smith, Rick Scupham and i think Derry (but i maybe wrong).

Our best performing rink was the usual Joe Rollnik, Garry Rowlinson, Jeff Humpleby and Trevor Evans.

At the end of the game the scores were very close and the police lost overall by 1 shot.  I am afraid this loss lies with our club captain Darren as he threw a wrong bias (his first ever).....

Robbie and his happy crew                                                 Tony's crew                                                           Scarborough winners - most of the Reddens

Winners Joe, Gaz, Jeff, Trev

New Members

For the information of everyone we have a few new members that have joined recently. These include Peter ROGALSKI (associate), John MAWSON (retired Police officer) and Peter WEBSTER (retired police officer).  You may get to see these officers in the coming months / carnival.

Hellenics Feb 21

Today we played the Hellenic Club which we have been playing against for many years.  it is always a great game against these ladies and gentlemen and it was great to see some younger players amongst their group.

The police team cam out victorious again and Wayne Olive accepted the trophy.  It was a turn up for the books with the winning rink of Wayne (I usually give away the wine) Olive, Jeff Humpleby, John Hodges and Helen Miskell, the others must have played well.

I dont know who gave the wine away but will find out and update

Maccabi Feb 14

Once again we took on the Maccabi club and it was great to see so many familiar faces and also some new ones.  20 players each took to the green in what was a strong police team minus a few regular stalwarts.

The game was fairly tight early on with most rinks being fairly close but as the night progressed the police team got on top and powered away to win quite comfortably with a  score of 101 to 49.  A couple of big rink wins by 22 and 18  being the big difference.  Again our winningest rink went to the soul destroyer Joe Rollnik ably assisted by Dave Hitchman, Ron (wrong hat again) Hutchinson and Harvey Larson.  We lost one rink and no it wasn't Wayne or Corny it went to the home grown skipper of Trevor McGillivray, Egon M, Trevor Evans and Shaun "Figgy" Peters.

Fellowship after the game was enjoyed and again Darren won the bourbon with Paul Walker taking out the other prize.

Triples Jan 31 and Feb 7

The police bowling cohort headed south to Leeming Bowling Club for our club Triples.  We had a good turn out of 30 for this event which unfortunately makes an alignment round.

One big surprise was that it was not that cold at Leeming for both nights. Night one did bring out a strong breeze for the second game.

After the early semi's it came down to the finals in almost perfect conditions.  The major was down to Joe Rollnik and his dynamic ladies of Lena Evans and Kerry Hutchinson ( many comments of the best Hutchinson and Evans were in the finals) against Corny, Egon M and Helen Feasey.  In what was a close game up to about the midway mark when Joe's team took the ascendency and never looked back and went to win the final by 6 shots.

In the plate it came down to  Garry Rowlinson, Dave Hitchman and Kiera Redden against Wayne Olive, Ron Hutchinson and Derry Barber. Again it was another good game with the skippers playing some telling bowls.  In the end it was Garry Rowlinson team winning comfortably.

Big thankyou to Leeming for letting us use their great club for this event.

North Perth Jan 24

It was another good turn out for the game against North Perth for the Neville and Trixie PHILP trophy.

A beautiful evening and would have been good to see the Booths but Al forget he put his name down...early onset i think.

It was a very close game across most rinks with either one shot as the margin, one draw but there was one major blow out score in our favour which was skippered by none other than.........No not Joe as usual,  Corny and his team of Scott Bermingham, Bill Little and Helen Feasey.

Food and fellowship after the game was thoroughly enjoyed.

Swan Jan 17

It was another great night for the game against Swan who are celebrating their 125 year anniversary. They are one of the 4 oldest clubs in Perth and the only club still on their original site.

This was the inaugural "The Rowlinson Family Trophy" game, that is to commemorate the connection between the Swan Bowling Club ( 4 generations of Rowlinsons have played here) and the WA Police Bowling Club.  A great turn out with 7 rinks for both teams.  It was a very close game going into the last 4 ends on each rink.  Trev McGillivray group was well in front by 25 shots but 5 rinks were down and the aggregate was only 14 shots.  A late surge by the police team saw us only lose on one rink and it is not often we see the rink of  Joe Rollnik lose the wine.  His team of Leon Smith, Ralph Bailey and Kerry Hutchinson assisted him.

Our best performing rink was Trev McGillivray, Scott Bermingham, Billy Little and Harvey Larson.  The team they did play had an average age of 80 (only 7 eyes) but they played valiantly.

The inaugural trophy winners were the WA Police Team and Brooke Rowlinson gave a speech on behalf of the family and awarded our club captain Darren Rowlinson the trophy.

RSL Jan 3

Another beautiful evening for the game against our great friends the RSL.  Large numbers turned out for both teams, with again  WAPBC members pulling out on the day.

The greens at Yokine ran a little faster this year. But as always the game was played in great spirit. WAPBC had the pleasure of Wayne COCKSEDGE (Cocko) from NSW Police Bowling over here for short holiday and playing in Darren's team.

We had 8 rinks each and  we had 3 fill in from RSL to make up our numbers.  In the end the RSL were too strong and got over the line comfortably.

The winningest rink from us was Tony KAY (home ground knowledge), Shaun (Figgy) PETERS and Kerry Hutchinson and a RSL member.

The wine giverawayerers was Gary Rowlinson, Leon Smith and Harvey Larson (fourth person escapes me)

SINGLES Championship Dec 16

Well the singles championship was held over three weeks and culminated in the final on December 16.

Three glorious nights was had and a very strong field came out for the singles.

The finals of the plate came down to Tony Kay and Phil Dobie.  Tony got to a good lead that phil couldn't quite make up the difference and Tony went on to win.

In the MAJOR we saw a great exhibition of singles bowls by two of the club favourites Paul WALKER and Alan BOOTH.  This was a great game and some tremendous conversion shots were done by both bowlers.  You will have to wait a while to see a better game.  In the end Paul WALKER was the winner and is now our current Singles CHAMPION.

Following the great games, members enjoyed our Christmas Party which was a beautiful spread of chicken ,prawns, sandwiches, salad and dessert.  The fellowship on hand was great to see.

The committee wishes everyone a great year and look forward to visiting Victoria for the Carnival in April 2023.

NORTH BEACH Nov 15

After a magnificent day in the 30's, the police turned out with 27 players to take on the might of North Beach. The fine sporty figures of bowlers was again outdone by the beach volleyballers next door. (where was Moocance when we needed him)

Again the started off magnificently with the club and in particular one of our Paul Walker providing hamburgers prior to the game.  Thanks Paul.

A slight wind blew from the south west, 7 rinks filled the lightning North Beach green.  It was quite a close game with the police winning the night 114-104.

Our best winning rink was that of Darren Rowlinson, Wayne Molloy, Trevor Evans and Harvey Larson who scored a one on the last end to pip corny.  Not to mention the best player on the rink was actually the lead for North Beach who is legally blind.

Our losing rink for the night was Paul Walker, Egon M@#$%&%$#@, Lena Evans and ?

PERTH TATTS Nov 8

Another glorious night was had with a strong police contingent.  Again members removed themselves from their previous nomination for the night and left us short.  What makes it worse is that others wanted to play and were told no room.

It was a convincing win for the police with a very tight tussle for giving the wine away and on a countback it was Leon Smith, Dave Hitchman, John Hodges and Lesley York.

The highlight of the evening was the 'Quokka' and her puppet master Rick, it was very Instagram worthy.

GOSNELLS Nov 2

Was another delightful night against Gosnells.  Was a very tight game in the end and we were quite short on numbers with  quite a few triples teams.

We ended up losing this game 97-94. Even though one team got obliterated 31-11 and this was a triples group of Harvey Larson Lena Evans and Corny.  The only highlight for this group was Corny's impersonation of Aaron Wilson winning the Commonwealth Games by running around with his shirt off.

Our best performing rink was Keith Guelfi, Tony Evans and Leslie York.

LEEMING Oct 25

It was a great turn out to play Leeming which is home to a few of our members.  We had 28 players  on a coolish and standard windy night at Leeming.  The new green (plenty of knap Harvey) was running beautifully.

It was another win to the police in a very tough game with a 119 - 97.  Loses were kept very tight with three rinks losing by 1, 2 and 3. We figured out a formula so that Wayne does not lose the wine.....he played three to Darren.

Our losingest rink was one of Leemings own, semi retired Phil Dobie, Jeff Humpleby, Ron Hutchinson and Leslie York

Our successful rink again was Joe Rollnick, Scott Bermingham, Bill Little and Sean Peters.

ROSSMOYNE Oct 19

It was another lovely evening for bowls.  We had 27 players for the evening.  One of our new up and comers decided to combine the underarm game and the overarm game by turning up in his cleated shoes....see below photo.  The atmosphere was electric with comradery across all the rinks really high.   Some superb games and great bowls played.

A very close fought game with 4 shot win in the aggregate to us.

Our most outstanding rink was that with Garry 'Rowlo' Rowlinson, Leon 'I win everything at Yanchep' Smith. Rick 'Quoka' Scupham and Shaun 'Figgy' Peters.   Not one person without a nickname in that group.

Our poorest performing rink this week was again Wayne Olive, Jeff Humpleby, cant remember who was 2 and Leslie York.

Matts dynamic Pink Cricket Shoes Rossmoyne Winners

ELLENBROOK Sept 28

It was an absolute sensational evening at Ellenbrook to play for the Peter WALSH trophy, the weather was perfect, very minimal wind.  For many of the members you wouldn't know Peter who is one of Life Members, long time WAPBC President and is a member of the Ellenbrook club.  What made the evening even more special was that Peter played for the Police team on the night.

Our numbers were low but we managed to win the night overall by 20+ shots.  Our best performing rink was Ellenbrook's Joe Rollnick, Leon Smith, Lena Evans and Derry Barber and convincing they were by winning comfortably by about 30 shots.

The wine giverawayers were Tony Evans (who played superb), Rick Scupham, Harvey Larson and skippered by corny.

Past Presidents Sep 20

On what turned out to be a beautiful evening we took on the dwindling numbers of the Past Presidents.  We had 20 players to their 17 with Helen Feasey assisting them.  It was great to see life member Alan Hogarth bowling.

Some very good bowls were played the Police won 3 rinks to 2 with the aggregate being 90-74.  We had two teams competing on winning the wine and two on giving away the wine.  In the end it came down to the last ends on each to see who the winners and the losers were.

In the end our best performing rink was Paul Walker, David Hitchman, Alan Hogarth and Helen Miskell.

Our losingest rink was Wayne Olive, Ron Hutchinson, Barry Feasey and Leslie York.  Wayne is very much getting a reputation for being either the recipient or the giver away of wine.

There are some photographs at the bottom of the page

SOUTH PERTH - Sept 8

In what turned out to a perfect night, no rain for the first time in two years we took on the might of the South Perth Bowling Club.  Again the hospitality at South Perth was sensational with Ryan Havercroft and his team providing hamburgers prior to the game.

We had 26 players for the night in fresh conditions and welcomed two new bowlers to the Police Bowling family.  Matt Wiltshire and Billy Little played their first games and performed well for their first times especially on the quick 18 second greens.  Matt christened his first day with 2 wrong biases but some Corny ingenuity with chalk pen made sure perfect delivery would occur.

7 rinks were made and we actually won 4-3 on rinks, aggregate was 143 to 103 but three rinks were beaten convincingly and on a countback the wine was lost by Phil Dobie, Rob Bellis, Barry Feasey and Helen Miskell.

Our winningist was Arthur Bartlett, Scott Bermingham and Derry Barber.

2022/23 CLUB FOURS CHAMPIONS

The fours was played over 2 nights this August in quite cold conditions with 7 teams playing.

The final came down to Phil Dobie, Scott Bermingham, Kerry Hutchinson and Lesley York playing against Paul Walker, Darren Rowlinson, Trevor Evans and Helen Miskell.  The game was very tight and came down to a few skipper conversions late to gain the ascendency.

Congratulations to Phil Dobie, Scott Bermingham, Kerry Hutchinson and Lesley York on being the Club Four Champions.

The Fours Plate Winners were Joe Rollnik, Rob Bellis, Mal Kinnaird and Julie Walters.
