2023 - 24 WEEKLY GAME REVIEWS
COMO 26/3
What a turn out by us for this week, must be end of pennant season, we had 28 players and had myself and Shaun Peters sit out to accommodate late requests to play. Big thankyou to COMO for providing a sausage sizzle before the game and to getting another green to fit us all in.
On a great night if a little fresh, great to see a few wearing our new hoodies. They looked good across the green. Our seven rinks took to the nice grass, even if a little slow. We had some very tight games and a couple of blow outs to each side. In the end we won by 40 plus shots so a good way to head towards our upcoming carnival.
Our best performing rink was Paul Walker, Scotty Bermingham, Leon Smith and Derry barber who got a 3 on the last end to pip Arthurs group for the wine.
Unfortunately our worst rink was Mike Carey, Wayne Molloy, Marg Booth and John Hodges who came up against a skipper that didnt miss much at all. Just one of those days.
Bassendean 19/2
Our second last game of this season and we played on the wonderful greens of Bassendean. The night was perfect, if not a little fresh. Our new hoodies arrived and a few of our players adorned the new hoody and they looked pretty good (well done Kiera). As usual the hospitality of the Bassendean club is second to none, sausage sizzle provided before the game and nibbles after the game, big thankyou to Scott Bermingham and his crew. This was a black armband game as we remembered Barry Feasey who was a current member of both clubs.
We had a full contingent of 24 for this game, which saw a great tussle across 6 rinks. The game was fairly tight all evening with some close games. In the end we won on 3 rinks, drew on one and lost on two. Our worst rink was only two shots and was good to see the Bassendean boys cheering our only remaining rink on the green for them to get shot so they could win the wine. In the end Wayne Olives crew of Derry, Trev ans Scott gave up the wine witha mere 2 shot loss.
Our best performing rink was again Joe's who had Harvey, John H, Dave with him. They got out to a massive 14 - nil lead before the basso boys/girls fought back.
KALAMUNDA 12/3
We seemed blessed this year asanother perfect night for bowls with minimal wind and perfect conditions. We had 22 players and got two from Kala to make up the 24. A lot of rivalry in this fixture as three Kalamunda skippers play for the police in Wayne, Arthur and Corny. A great comradery was evident on the greens and some great bowls played.
In the end we won four rinks with a couple quite convincing and the best police rink was Corny who is more used to giving the wine away, who played with Dave, Hutchy and Lesley.
For our worst rink we had a tie with both Phil and Tony both losing by 5. There many attempts to bribe the adjudicator (corny) but no bourbon passed hands so it came down to ends. one won 7 the other 8. In the end Tony, Garry, Carolyn and Trevor Evans gave the wine away.
And yes in the photo of the Kalamunda team Neil is a giant.
SORRENTO 05/3
A beautiful night was had at the club of the Hutchy's. Again the hospitality was great and sausage sizzle provided before the game. Our best turnout for a while with 24 players taking to the new synthetic surface. It was great to have Darren up for the week. The kiss of death selection of Dylan, Darren and Corny again came true. We got massacred and introduced Shaun into this feeling. Nevertheless the surface was great and the friendly banter across all the rinks was a pleasure to see. Some great games were had with some good scores overall in the police favour. At the end of the evening we won quite convincingly.
Our best rink of the evening was Joe's with Arthur, Carolyn and Harvey. Our only loosing rink was as the previously mentioned Corny's team.
SCARBOROUGH 27/2
Who would have thought we could play against Scarborough and not have any rain, well it happened and i still cannot believe it. But it was freezing cold.
Well another thankyou for having a sausage sizzle before the game. We had 22 with a couple of extras from Scarborough to assist. The only disappointment was I (Corny) got drawn against Kiera's mum, this time her dad was in the team. I always struggle against them.
Well we started off really strong on the majority of rinks with only two rinks behind, yes mine and Mike Carey's. As the games progressed we were up on 4 and Mike and I tussling to see who gave the wine away. Luckily i got a 4 on the last end to ensure i didnt give it it away.
Our best performing rink was Tony, Dave, Marg and Harvey and unfortunately Mike's group gave the wine away. But we won the trophy overall
RSL 20/2
We played the might of the RSL and we have had some great games against these gentlemen over the years. Wayne and Garry ran the evening and for WAPBC it was with great sadness that we saw the passing of two of our members. Barry Feasey who joined with his partner Helen and have been great supporters of ours. Secondly we lost Trevor McGillivray who has been with us for many years, Trev served on the committee and has been to many carnivals. Both will be sorely missed and prayers and thoughts are with family and our members that were very close to these two fine gentlemen.
MACCABI 20/2
Unfortunately due to health i couldnt make this game. Wayne lead a very triumphant team against the Maccabi unit at Mount Lawley BC. We only fielded 19 players and we won quite easily.
CLUB TRIPLES 30/1- 6/2
We had a the perfect turn out plus one for the triples. A certain fines master of Phil Dobie had a senior moment and thought the yes with a tick and no with a cross on the front screen meant he had said yes. Well Phil is basically retired and now entitled to a seniors card. My apologies to all the switched on pensioners but Phil is new to rank and not used to all the work he now has to do.
Well the games progressed and we got down to the finals, and surprise surprise Phil made it to the final with Leon and Shaun and they played the dream team of Joe, Michael's Taylor and Humphreys. The dream team made up 3/4 of our singles finals this year. Unfortunately for them they got Phil on his home track and congratulations to Phil, Leon and Shaun.
In the plate final we saw Tony, Ralph and Harvey take on the ladies of Boothy, Kerry and Kiera. It was another great game and Tony's team played the best to win so big congrats to them.
NORTH PERTH 23/1 The Trixie and Neville PHILP Trophy
Again we ventured to the North Perth club to take on Tony Kays home club. Numbers for North Perth are always high and we streuggle to match their number. We came close with 25, with a few ringin's we managed to have 7 rinks.
The greens were running the best they have for a while, what started out as a perfect evening the wind soon picked up and had many wishing they brought their jumpers. Quite a few resorted to normal bowls cold weather gear which made for extra donations to the Legacy tin.
What was a pretty close game for most of the evening against the very competitive North Perth team, in the end a couple of blow outs to the detriment of the police saw the home team come out victorious by 14 shots.
Our losingest rink was very tight contest and Corny's crew were very surprised not to be giving the wine away. In the end Dave Hitchman, Jenni Rogalski, Rick and John Mawson had the worse margin by 1.
Our best rink was Arthur, Kerry H, Leon and a North Perth ringin.
This was the third time North Perth have won the trophy and WAPBC keen to regain the trophy next year.
Great hospitality after the game with chicken and chips provided by North Perth.
SWAN 16/1 Rowlinson Family Trophy
The evening was set, weather perfect, a great turnout of 24 ( or so it seemed Carey's) to take on the 4th oldest WA bowling club but the only one on its original site for the Rowlinson Family Trophy. The hospitality of swan was again exemplary, with a sausage sizzle provided prior to the game.
This year we only had the two generations of Rowlinsons playing in Swan President and WAPBC star of Garry and the youngest Rowlinson Dylan.
It was great to have Scotty back in the fold after his bypass surgery. 6 rinks took to the green which for a night game ran pretty good. The evening was played in great spirits as per normal with quite a few close rinks. One rink got Natalotto'd as they played the whole family, they ended up being the losers of the wine so unlucky to Keith Guelfi, Jeff Humps, Mal K and John Sweetheart Hodges.
Our winningest rink was Corny, Kerry H, Rick and Peter Rogers ( who retired sick after having a supposed dodgy sausage).
In the end the police team won by 5 shots overall.
The Rowlinson Family Trophy was presented to Wayne Olive by Brooke Rowlinson.
SINGLES FINALS 12/12
Well the crowd filtered into the South Perth Bowling Club, the anticipation of great bowls, food and fellowship. It was a tremendous turnout of about 35 members and partners.
The games commenced with the battle of the Michaels in the plate. The game started off very even and was a great display of getting the first bowl on the jack made it hard for your opponent. In the end, Michael Humphreys got the ascendency with his draw bowl consistency as a lead shinning through. Well played to both Michael Taylor on getting to the final and a big congratulations to Michael Humphreys on winning the plate in his first year.
The major brought together the ever consistent Joe Rollnik and the GOOD of Arthur Bartlett. This game was almost parallel to the plate final with both starting well and being very equal. Joe then got into his rhythm of moving the mat up, and lightning speed through the ends. Joes consistency on the night got him in front and Arthur just couldn't peg him back enough. Congratulations to Arthur on making the final and a big congratulations to Joe Rollnik on his win.
After the game the members enjoyed fellowship and some smoked treats from Corny.
Singles Week Two 05/12
Another beautiful night at South Perth, Ryan and his crew put on another perfect night for us.
We saw the quarter and semi finals played last night. I didn't see many of the games but scores were close across most of the quarter finals.
The major semi finals were played and we saw Joe take on Tony K, was a game that kept changing not with the wind alone , Joe who played a few up shots didn't get what he wanted but got the result saw him edge away from Tony and come out on top to make the final.
In the other semi final the Kalamunda Stalwarts of Wayne and Arthur fronted up against each other. What a game. Wayne got off to flyer and got a great lead, eventually Arthur found his line and length and fought back to get in front 20-18. Wayne tried a conversion shot and then hit the jack but moved it to Arthurs bowls for Arthur to win his place in the final.
Plate semis saw Mick T play Corny, it was a very tight game early. Mick showed great poise with draw and drive to come out on top and make his way to the final. In the other we saw two new to club members in Michael Humphrey taking on Jeff Gadenne. It was a very good game with very tight ends in the end Michael got on top. To make next week the battle of the Michaels
Next week is the xmas wind up, with great bowls, food and fellowship.
Major Singles: Joe Rollnik v Arthur Bartlett
Plate Singles: Michael Humphreys v Mick Taylor.
Singles Week One 28/11
A perfect turnout for the start of the singles with 24 players. Big thankyou to South Perth for allowing us to play at their lovely club.
The pop stick draw was completed and a good spread of players that looked fairly even.
Group One when Dave unfortunately drew Joe as his first opponent and Egon had the pleasure of marking. This was standard Joe day, very very quick games and all done by 8.30 ish when some were not even finishing their first game. Joe was quite convincing and won with Dave taking the plate position.
Group Two or known as the red bowl section, with every player having the exact same colour, very similar markings. Good job as the heads for nearly all three games were very tight and a mat could separate all the bowls. In very tight contest Garry won the section with Mick Taylor in the plate and the very unlucky loser Mike Carey.
Group Three had a good mix of youth and experience with Rick and Jenni playing a tight game with Jenni getting over the line, brett strode to the mat and bowled very well to get past Rick. The win each final round saw Jenni get the better of Brett to continue in the major. Brett - plate.
Group Four, 3 of the clubs skippers in one section. Phil took on the in form Tony K and Phil got off to a flyer and was leading by 7 shots and in need of 2. Tony fought back sensationally to get to 16 all, but Phil won the last end. Tony then played Corny and Tony dominated the game for the most parts and won. In the final game Phil and Corny battle began, Corny got the ascendency early and Phil fought back but Corny won to make the plate. Tony K won the section.
Group Five what can we say about this section but their games were quite tight and that they finished the pool games in almost two days. Started on Tuesday and almost finished on a Wednesday. In the first game Kerry beat Trev Evans 17-16. In the next Trev beat Peter Rogalski, some came down to last game and Peter just got the better Kerry. Well buggered i think they all were. Trev - major, Peter - plate.
Group Six saw a couple of stalwarts in Wayne and Mal take on the fresh faced Jeff Gadenne. In what was a couple of good games. Wayne won both of his but didnt have it all his own way. In the decider for the plate, Jeff got the better of Mal to make it through to the plate, not bad.
Group 7 Another good mix in this section with Arthur as the fav but either opponent Kiera or Leon could upset the apple cart . In some great games Arthur won the section with 2 wins and Leon won the plate battle against Kiera
Group Eight saw the mix of new and old (sorry Harvey) But the wise old head of Popeye (Harvey ) won the day over Michael Humphrey (first year) and the mercurial Wayne Molloy. Michael did enough to get through in the plate.
FESA Nov 21
On a very warm November evening we took to the green to play our fellow emergency services colleagues the 'Firies' . They are a great bunch of ladies and gentlemen and wonderful night was had by all. We both had 22 players so fielded 4 x fours and 2 triples teams. It was great to have Darren our club captain up for the game. He is really enjoying his new roll down in Bunbury but does miss the comradery of our group.
In what was quite a tight game early on the police managed to extinguish the flames that were igniting the firies, and the police ended up winning 5 of the 6 rinks. The only rink to lose was to Rhonda Prosser the sister of a previous police bowler in Trevor Staples. Speaking of Trevor's it was great to see Trev McGillivray out on the green for a few short ends before being replaced by Ron Hutchinson who at 80+ was moving sand bags and did his back.
Police team held onto the trophy for the 6th consecutive year and Darren received this from Vic (FESA) who regaled the audience with his stand up jokes. As a triple won and the firies had two bottles of wine left over, Vic made a speech thanking Darren for all his comradery and commitment over the many years of them co-ordinating the fixture and presented Darren with the wine to say thankyou.
Our best performing rink was Paul Walker, Kerry Hutchinson and Trevor Evans who were about neck and neck with another rink, until Lesley came to check the scores to see if her rink would win. Which jinxed the situation and Pauls team got a 5 and 4 on the last ends to win overall. Moral is dont count your chickens too soon.
Gosnells Nov 8
Well the organising of the teams each week is starting to get chaotic, with numbers fluctuating almost hourly. I am surprised Darren still had his hair.
Well we eventually got to have 6 rinks with 5 rinks needed a spare from Gosnells to make the numbers even. With only a slight breeze to be had we enjoyed the harmonic sounds of the constantly up and down and the ding donging of the boom gates, the sweet aroma of HJ's in the air. With our taste buds tantalised we commenced our match against the strong Gosnells team, all of their top division skippers were on show. The games were pretty close for the most, but on 5 rinks the home team got the ascendency.
The only rink to be successful and win the wine without any competition was Wayne Olive, Rob Bellis, Jeff Munn (Gosnells) and Lesley York.
The wine giverawayerers was the unfortunate Tony Kay, Kerry Hutchinson, Greg (Gosnells) and Harvey Larson.
The food provided by the Gosnells club at the end was sensational with pies, sausage rolls, chicken wings, spring rolls, very much appreciated by all that attended.
Perth Tatts Oct 31
Well Halloween came and it was good to see that quite a few of the police team were scary enough without dressing up. It was great to see the return of the Feasey's. Barry is now in a wheel chair due to his lung capacity, but it was great to see him supporting.
we had about 32 people on the app before the game and due to only 5 rinks available at tatts we had to scuttle our numbers down to 20. In the end we had 21 as Dave Lister obviously needs new glasses as he thought his screen said he was a yes when in fact it was giving him the option of yes or no. - Legacy donation.
Due to Dave being an extra we played with 5 players on each side and with 20 bowls on a slow rink if they were short and there was plenty it was hard or near impossible to get through withour luck.
Well our team of 5 lost their game by a convincing margin which Joe's rink tried his hardest to balance out the aggregate.
In the end Paul Walker, Garry Rowlinson, Brett McCance, Dave Lister, Derry Barber lost the wine to the Tatts 5...so i had to buy a bottle of wine from the club, which cost the same as our yearly expenditure on wine.
Our bestest rink on the night was Joe, Kerry (2 weeks in row...hic), Rick and Shaun who had a very convincing win.
Leeming 24/10
As Bowls bags were removed from cars they were delighted that the excess weight had been removed from the boot area. I think every bag had at least 2 jumpers and a beanie expecting the usual Leeming area to have a freezing cold wind. This year was pleasant and only one jumper was required and minimal amount of head wear of the beanie kind was visible across the greens.
A good turn out of 24 members was delightful to see. With a good mix of players we took to the greens against a depleted Leeming. The game was played in great spirit as always and the Police team held on for a convincing win. All six rinks win so it was down to our lowest winners to hand over the wine. The winners were an all lady team which is always a nemesis to the Police team. This time Joe, Garry ( i will fill the others later) gave the wine away.
The winningest rink was Arthur Bartlett, Kerry Hutchinson, Mal Kinnaird and Jeff Gadenne.
Rossmoyne Oct 18
It was a great turn out by the WAPBC for this weeks game with 27 players turning out for us. It was a big loss as Club Captain Darren was transferred to Bunbury. We look forward to the days when he comes up to play on his days off.
Rossmoyne again showed great hospitality and provided a sausage sizzle at the start of the evening. It was another magical night on the blue carpet and the weather was almost perfect .
We put out 7 quite even teams and had a lot of strength across all rinks. This was evident with the scores as for the majority of rinks had the police winning even in the tight tussles. The laughter from across the green indicated every one was having fun.
Bob Bandy's team was having a very tough game against Shaan Saunders and was behind for most of the match and likely thought that they would give the wine away but alas no a newcomer appeared with a late flourish. Our pairs champions of Dave Hitchman, Shonky ably assisted by Michael Humphrey and Mal Kinnaird managed to assist the opposition in the last four ends to give the wine away.
At the other end there was a three way competition to see who won the wine, Corny's, Waynes and Tony K's teams were all neck and neck going into the last end. Wayne finished first with 13 shot win. Tony's team dropped a 2 to fall out of contention. Corny holding 1 to have the same shot difference as Wayne, played a shot to push Rossmoynes second shot out of the head and thus hold four. With Wayne and Egon on the bank cheering for Rossmoyne the bowl was missed by cm's. On a countback Wayne's team lost 4 ends to Corn's 5. So the wine winners were Wayne, Jeff Humpleby, Egon and Lesley.
Club Pairs FINALS Oct 10
Well we came down to the last 8 and some brilliant performances by a ll players at different times in the games.
Major
Dave Hitchman and Shonky played Wayne and Ralph and was quite even early then Shonky and Dave got well on top and went to to win.
Darren and John Mawson took on the might of Paul Walker and Harvey and the game was quite an even tussle with both teams evenly matched. A couple of monster up shots from Paul got his side the advantage and went on to win as well.
The final was an epic struggle with all players having a great game. Paul and Harvey got out to a few shots lead going into the second last end. Shonky out lead Harvey on this end, but Paul drew some great shots to either get shot or cut the count down, each time Dave let a perfect over draw shot to sit Paul out to go into the last end with a one shot lead. Again Shonky sent down two superb bowls to be holding two at the crossover. Dave put his bowl behind to cover the drive. Paul played two draw shots that had the perfect line but was just short. Paul with his last bowl needed to dislodge the two shots but missed narrowly wide and big congratulations go to our Pairs Champions Dave Hitchman and Peter 'Shonky' Clifford. Unlucky but played a great game Paul Walker and Harvey Larson.
Plate
Plate Semi Final games were Scott Bermingham and Shaun Peters against Garry Rowlinson and Kerry Hutchinson in another tight struggle early in the game, Kerry got the lead ascendency early on Shaun and Rowlo having the better of Scott. The tide changed then, Scott and Shaun then powered to the finish line.
In the other plate semi final Joe and Egon had a convincing win over Phil and Kerry. Egon was on fire but i think it was one of those days for Phil and Kerry were if it could go wrong it did.
The plate final was tight early but then Joe and Egon got in front and never looked back and won convincingly in the end. Congratulations to our Pairs Plate winners Joe Rollnik and Egon Mikolajczyk. Unlucky to Scott Bermingham and Shaun Peters.
Pairs winners Dave & Shonky Runners Up Harvey & Paul Plate Winners Joe & Egon
Club Pairs Oct 3
Well our first two rounds of the club fours have been completed at the Innaloo club. For a fresh evening it was very pleasant under the roof.
There were a couple of blow out scores and some very close games and we are now progressing through to the semi finals next week. These games will start at 6pm as we have to complete two games.
Major Semi finals are Dave Hitchman / Shonky Vs Wayne Olive / Ralph Bailey and the other is Darren Rowlinson/ John Mawson vs Paul Walker / Harvey Larson.
Plate Semi finals are Phil Dobie / Kerry Carey vs Joe Rollnik / Egon M and Garry Rowlinson / Kerry Hutchinson vs Scott Bermingham / Shaun Peters.
Come down and give our players a cheer
Ellenbrook Sept 27
It was probably our lowest turnout for players for quite a while with only 18. Ellenbrook had quite a few and one of their teams played for us.
This is a great night as we play for the Peter WALSH Trophy. Peter is a current life member of WAPBC and member of Ellenbrook. Peter was there to present the trophy.
Ellenbrook were determined to win the trophy with quite a strong unit. In the end the game was won by Ellenbrook but with one of their sides smashing their other team who was playing for us. From the Police perspective we won in our direct games against Ellenbrook. But the night is about Peter Walsh and he was rather chuffed that Ellenbrook won.
Our strongest team that won the wine was Dave Hitchman, Rob Bellis, Ron Hutchinson and Bill Little.
Past Presidents Sept 19
We took on the past presidents who are really struggling with numbers but are such a nice group of bowlers.
We had 24 turn out for their 16 so we supplied them Leon and Mike Taylor to assist and make up 6 triples for them. It was a strange evening with the threat of rain but it only misted for a short while. The Cambridge greens were pretty slick. It was a very close game with only a few ends to go the score difference was 2 up to us. Corny again got pitted against a female skipper and boy did she play well and if it wasn't for a 6 on the second last end would have lost. In the end the police stormed home to win by 19 shots.
Our best winning rink was agin Joe, Jeff Humpleby, Peter Rogers and Carolyn ( i almost win as much as Joe) Little. Our wine giver awayerers were Tony Kay, Kerry Carey and Leslie York.
Thornlie Sept 12
it was an absolutely perfect evening to take on the Thornlie Bowling Club. Again the hospitality of the Thornlie crew was top notch. Hotdogs were placed on before the game....delicious.
We had a good turnout of 26 players and Thornlie provided 2 players so we had 7 rinks each.
the game was a very tight contest with the Police in front early and only the Corny rink down 19-4. Arthurs team got off to very good start 12 -0. The rinks were very even coming into the last few ends with Police down on three rinks. In the end the police got over the line and Joe Rollnik crew dropping 4 on the last end to lose by 5 to give the wine away much to the relief of Corn's team.
Our winningest rink of Wayne Olive, Shonky, Mal Kinnaird and Shaun Peters picking up the wine.
The food after the game was very much appreciated and was a great spread.
The trophy was presented by dual member Leslie York in honour of her son Peter Ball and was received by Club Captain Darren.
Jenny getting her purse ready for the wrong bias???????
South Perth Sept 6
Well our first hit out for the year against the strong South Perth Team, there were a number of Premier league stars out for them. On a fresh evening we fielded 24 players. The evening started off with the fantastic hospitality of the South Perth Bowling club with hamburgers done before the game.
The game was very even for most of it, with Garry Rowlinson doing the master board kept us all informed how close we were. The green was running exceptionally quick. In the end we lost by 10, 102-92. Our winning rink was that of Bob Bandy, Harvey Larson, Rick Scupham and Egon M
Our team that gave the wine away was Tony Kay, Dave Hitchman, Jenny Rogalski,
Club Fours August 22 & 29
Well our first event of the year has come around already. We had 28 players nominate so made 7 teams which is a little unfortunate that one team had one game. The weather being a bit fresh at Innaloo some great games were played and some big scores late in games change the results.
We got through to the finals and the plate was contested by Phil Dobie, Darren Rowlinson, Jenny Rogalski, Shaun Peters taking on Tony Kay, Bob Bandy, Mal Kinnaird and Ralph Bailey. It was a very even contest and some good bowls played. Tony's team were just that bit more consistent and won in the end. Congratulations to Tony, Bob,Mal and Ralph.
In the Major draw we saw Joe Rollnik, Scott Bermingham, Kerry Hutchinson and Peter Clifford take on Keith Guelfi, Wayne Molloy, Peter Rogalski and Carolyn LIttle. Great to see Carolyn in her very first attendance at police bowls (even though a member last year) make it through to the major final, she must have bowled well to get her motley crew through.
Guelf's foursome got off to a very handy lead but then once Joes group got to grip of the surface there was no stopping them and they pushed through and won comfortably. Congrats to both teams but Joe, Scotty, Kerry and Shonky on winning the fours.
Joe Kerry Scotty Shonky Peter Wayne Keith Carolyn
